The Chaga mushroom is often called the “king of medicinal mushrooms”. It looks like a dark black woody mass rather than a mushroom as we often envision.  Most people probably would not even notice or recognize it as a mushroom if walking through the forest and saw it.

It is not soft like a mushroom, but hard, almost as hard as wood. It is very unusual, nothing like regular mushrooms. Chaga is the most nutritionally dense of all tree growths. It is identified by the Siberians as the Gift from God and the Mushroom of Immortality.  This mushroom has been used by humans to foster health and wellness for thousands of years.  In Japan, they refer to it as The Diamond of the Forest  The Chinese say it is the King of Plants. For the Chinese that is a huge statement, since they have a huge and ancient history with an array of many plants. Lion’s mane mushroom has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine as a brain tonic and as a treatment for lots of health conditions and overall wellness.

This mushroom is best known for increasing the strength of the immune system, aiding the body to ward off sickness and keep healthy and well. It is also great for digestive and colon health, because it contains beta glucan polysaccharides, polypeptides and fatty acids.

Lion’s mane is also good for the brain, helping to increase memory abilities and cognitive functions.

In addition to being good for the memory, Lion’s mane also helps in treating anxiety and depression. In a study with 30 menopausal women, published in 2010 in Biomedical Research, it was proved that the subjects taking Lion’s mane had reduced anxious and irritability and could focus more easily.

Also, it has been shown that Lion’s Mane is helpful to people suffering from high blood pressure.  In a study by Burton Goldberg in “Heart Disease” it showed fifty four people with an average age of 58.6 with a blood pressure reading over 140/90 that took 3 capsules of Lion’s mane per day for four weeks, all had blood pressure readings dropped below 140/90.

4.)  Turkey Tail

Turkey tail mushroom, like the other medicinal mushrooms, has long been championed in traditional Chinese medicine. This mushroom is thought to have healing powers to strengthen and fortify the body against illness and disease.

Its central effects are to strengthen the immune system, mostly by increasing the workings of one of the important cells, known as T helper cells. T helper cells communicate to all the other cells in the immune system what to do and to what degree, and when to halt.

In cancer, the runaway cells often produce compounds known as cytokines. These give fake signals to immune cells to stop working. This increases the ability of the cancer to survive. A bad side effect of chemotherapy and radiation is that they damage the immune system, in part by inadvertently killing T helper cells.

Turkey tail mushroom has been at the center of a huge number of studies in Asia proving that it can help rebuild the immune system in individuals with a large range of cancers. The benefit is very powerful.  It has been shown repeatedly, that taking turkey tail coupled with Western cancer therapies, greatly lengthens lifespan by as much as double. Turkey tail is not a magic bullet for cancer, but it has shown the power to extend life.

Reishi mushrooms have also been used in the treatment of pulmonary diseases and cancer.
