It appears that a 20-minute nap is over about the same time the caffeine starts to work and clears the brain of a molecule called adenosine which maximizes alertness. Adenosine is a byproduct of wakefulness and activity. When adenosine levels heighten, we get more fatigued. Taking a nap wipes out the adenosine and, this coupled with caffeine, a natural adenosine blocker, reduces its effects even more and boosts the effects of the nap.
