Dangers Of Sitting All Day

treadmill desk

In an NPR interview, epidemiologist Steven Blair, a professor of public health at the University of South Carolina, who has spent 40 years of his live investigating physical activity and health says in a study he conducted:

“found that men who reported more than 23 hours a week of sedentary activity had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease than those who reported less than 11 hours a week of sedentary activity. And many of these men routinely exercised. Blair says scientists are just beginning to learn about the risks of a mostly sedentary day”

..men who reported more than 23 hours a week of sedentary activity had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease than those who reported less than 11 hours a week of sedentary activity..

Moving on from NPR and citing more studies

Sitting also increases the risk of Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease in both sexes, and Early Death.
A host of studies published in and around 2012 conclude that sitting for long periods heightened the relative risk of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease over 100%.
These studies found this “effect” regardless of whether a person sitting for long periods of time, got the recommended amount of exercise for the rest of the day.

Shocking takeaway from these studies is that regardless of exercise you get to counteract sitting it doesn’t undo its damage to the body

Correlation between sitting and length of life

In a study by American Cancer Society of more than 100,000 people tracked since 1992 found that women who sit for more than six hours during their leisure time each day had a 37% greater chance of death than women who sat for three hours or less. Men had an 18% greater chance of death.
This finding was proved true regardless of whether the people got exercise each day.
But the good news is that those who also got exercise had a lower risk of death than those who didn’t, apparently just not enough to overcome the presumed effects of the sitting hours.

Sitting Increases Diabetes Risk in Women

In another recent study, it found that the more hours a person sat per day, particularly in women over the age 40, that higher markers of insulin resistance and inflammation were present.
This indicates an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
This again was proven true, as reported earlier in this article,  whether or not they got moderate exercise each day.
